How to play

Hits raise your damage %. The higher it gets, the farther you fly. Get knocked past the edge of the screen and you lose a life. Last fighter standing wins.

Move

Left thumb anywhere on the left side. Push gently to walk, flick to dash; keep holding to run. Hold down to crouch, flick down to drop through a platform or fast-fall. Flick up to jump (turn this off in Settings).

Buttons

Each button has a picture and its name: Attack (burst), Special (lightning), Jump (arrow), Shield and Grab (hand). Slide your thumb between buttons, e.g. Jump into Attack for a jump attack.

Attack

Tap for a jab, tap again for a combo. Hold a direction and tap for a tilt. Swipe Attack toward a direction for a smash (or flick the stick as you tap). In Modern rules, hold Attack to charge it. In the air, tap Attack with up, down, toward or away (or swipe Attack that way) for four different air attacks, or no direction for a neutral air.

Special

Tap alone, or with up or down; in Modern rules some fighters also have a side special. Up + Special gets you back to the stage.

Jump

Tap Jump (or flick up and let go) for a short hop, hold for a full jump. Jump again in the air. Up + Attack together right as you jump = up smash.

Shield

Hold to block. Push sideways to roll. (Modern rules add a spot dodge and an air dodge.)

Rules

Retro (default) is old-school: combos stick, no air dodge, no charging, Special to the side fires your neutral special, and you only grab ledges you're facing. Hit freeze? Flick the stick to nudge out of combos.

Counter

Hold Shield and tap Special right as an attack is about to hit you: you flash blue, block it and strike back. Shots get swallowed. Time it wrong and you're open for a moment, and grabs beat it.

Grab

Shield + Attack, then push forward or back to throw. (Modern: up/down throws and pummel.)

Tech

Launched into the ground? Tap Shield just before impact to recover instantly (hold a direction to roll).

Cancel

Tap Shield just before an air attack lands to cancel its landing lag (Retro rules: all of it).

Edges

You grab ledges automatically. Push toward the stage to climb, or press Jump or Attack.

Keyboard

Arrows or WASD move, J attack, K special, Space or I jump, L shield, U grab. Press a direction and J together for a smash. Gamepads: A attacks, X special, B or Y jumps, triggers shield, RB grabs.
